LSU Fires Kelly in 4th Season of His 10-Year, $100M Deal

LSU terminated head football coach Brian Kelly in the fourth year of his 10-year, $100 million contract, triggering one of college football's largest buyouts at approximately $54 million. Athletic Director Scott Woodward announced the dismissal following a loss to Texas A&M, stating required success "did not materialize."

Attorney Roy Maughan Jr. called the firing "inevitable" and explained contractual terms allow LSU to spread payments in monthly installments of approximately $800,000. The contract includes offset provisions and job-search clauses that could reduce LSU's financial obligation if Kelly secures new employment. Maughan noted Kelly's eventual new position will likely lower the final payout.
